There is something quietly miraculous about going somewhere to play.

Not just to watch. Not just to eat. Not just to scroll. To go somewhere, with someone, and pay a small amount of money for a small adventure. To come home with a story.

We have been doing this for at least 130 years. It is one of the most stubborn, beautiful, optimistic ideas in modern life. Every generation finds its own version of it. Not one of them has been able to put it down.

Four Saturdays, same instinct.

Cincinnati, 1895. A storefront on Vine Street has twelve phonographs lined up against the wall, beneath a hand-painted banner advertising music for a penny. An attendant in a starched collar keeps them running. People are dropping pennies into the slots to hear a song they have never heard before, by an artist they will never meet. Couples are doing this together. They will tell their children about it.

Brooklyn, 1955. Six pinball tables glow under a low ceiling in the basement of a candy store. The city outlawed these machines eleven years ago, on the suspicion that fun might be a form of gambling. The teenagers do not care. They have come here every weekend since they figured out the back stairs. The high score on Humpty Dumpty is held by a girl named Frankie who works at the deli down the block. Everyone in this room knows it.

Cleveland, 1985. A mall arcade hums under cigarette smoke and pretzel salt. A kid is two-handing Pac-Man. A crowd has formed without anyone organising it. Her cousin is at the snack bar. They have $7 between them and they are going to make it last until their mom comes back.

Anywhere, 2026. Six friends sit on a bench in a lobby, laughing and ribbing each other while staff walks them through the brief. In a few minutes they will put on headsets. None of them know quite how to pronounce the name of the experience. None of them care. They are here together. On Monday, they will not stop talking about it.

Different decades. Different equipment. The same stubborn, beautiful, human instinct: we want to play, and we want to play together, and we want it to happen in a room that is not ours.

Location-based entertainment is not a new industry. We are 130 years into it. The people building it today are inheriting something extraordinary.

What the penny arcade actually invented

The word “arcade” comes from a building. In 1890, a man named Andem opened storefronts in Cleveland and Cincinnati with a dozen phonographs in each, plus an attendant to keep them running. His Cincinnati location lived inside a building called the Emery Arcade, and the name stuck. Long before video games, penny arcades were America’s first form of affordable public entertainment, a way for working-class customers to pay a single coin and step, for a few moments, into wonder.

Andem’s contribution was simple, and underrated. Louis Glass had already put a phonograph in a San Francisco saloon in 1889. Edison’s Kinetoscope parlors arrived in 1894. What Andem added was the room itself. He arranged the machines so they shared a space, so an attendant could keep them running, so women and children would feel safe coming in. That last detail is the quiet revolution. The venue itself became part of the product. The room made the wonder welcoming.

Every modern operator is still using that template. Clean room. Curated experiences. Staff on hand. Pay per use. A space designed so that someone who has never done this before can walk in without bracing.

It was a generous tradition from the start. It still is.

The pinball years

The next century is, in a sense, an argument about what the room should be full of.

Pinball arrived in something like its modern form in the 1930s. By the 1940s, most major American cities had banned it, on the theory that it was a form of gambling rather than a game of skill. Fiorello LaGuardia had New York City police smash machines on camera in 1942. The ban held in New York until 1976, when a court ruling finally acknowledged what every player already knew: pinball is a game of skill.

It is hard to overstate how strange that is. For thirty years, an entire generation of Americans had been chasing the same small joy underground. They built communities around it anyway. They taught each other the machines. They watched each other play. They could not be talked out of it.

When pinball came back into the light, the machines were everywhere: bowling alleys, laundromats, restaurants, bars, drugstores, malls. The gathering started over. Strangers struck up conversations over leaderboards. A kid earning a free game was a small public spectacle.

The cabinet was changing. The instinct it served was not.

1977, the night pizza joined the party

In May of 1977, Nolan Bushnell, fresh off founding Atari, opened a restaurant in San Jose called Chuck E. Cheese’s Pizza Time Theatre. The pitch was straightforward and slightly bonkers: take the family out for pizza, play arcade games in the same room, watch animatronic robots perform between bites.

Chuck E. Cheese is not a footnote in LBE history. It is the moment “family entertainment center” stops being a phrase and starts being a business model. Food, games, and a destination people came to specifically because of what was inside. The DNA of every modern FEC and LBE venue is in that first San Jose dining room.

One footnote that deserves to be a flourish. Bushnell originally wanted to name the mascot Rick Rat. The marketing team intervened. The history of location-based entertainment is, in part, a long series of saves by people who said, very gently, “no, not that.”

The golden age and what it built

Then came the 1980s. Space Invaders in 1978. Pac-Man in 1980. Donkey Kong. Galaga. Mall arcades. Cabinets in pizza parlors, machines at bowling alleys, video games at the back of nearly every American convenience store. The journalists and researchers writing about that era describe arcades as the epicenters of youth culture, places where players gathered around cabinets, learned from one another, compared scores, and formed local reputations.

Read that sentence again. Then ask whether it describes a Saturday afternoon at a working LBE venue in 2026.

It does. The cabinet has become a headset. The quarter has become a session fee. Pac-Man’s joystick has become hand controllers. The teenager doing impressive things on Pac-Man and the bachelorette party doing impressive things on a multiplayer VR escape room are the same person, separated only by the equipment in the room.

What stays the same

Stand back from 130 years of equipment changes and a few quiet truths emerge. None of them are about hardware.

People will pay a small amount of money to do something together that they cannot quite do at home. They will travel to a specific room to do it. The room matters. A friendly person at the counter is worth more than any piece of equipment. A small group of friends sharing one ridiculous evening is the entire unit economics of joy. Word of mouth has been the secret engine of this industry since 1895. It still is.

The penny stopped buying anything in 1895. The phonograph parlor is a thing nobody alive remembers. Most mall arcades closed in the 90s. Chuck E. Cheese has been bankrupt twice. None of that has changed the instinct underneath. The same impulse that built every one of those rooms is the reason a vrCAVE venue is opening its doors somewhere this Friday night.

A tradition worth being proud of

LBE operators are not pioneers in a vacuum. They are the latest stewards of one of the most durable, friendly, useful ideas in modern entertainment. A clean room. An attendant. A thing to do together, for a small price. A story to take home.

It is a tradition the penny arcade would recognise on sight. It is a tradition Frankie at the candy-store pinball machine would recognise on sight. It is a tradition the kid two-handing Pac-Man would recognise on sight. Drop any of them into a vrCAVE venue today, in front of the lobby and the headsets and the laughing strangers about to become a team for the next 45 minutes, and they would understand exactly what was happening.

They would smile. They would want to know how the high score worked.

We get to keep doing this. That is the gift. The technology will change again, and again, and again. The instinct will not. Every generation finds its own room. Every operator who opens a door this Friday is part of that lineage. A 100-year-old idea that refuses to get old.

Go open the doors.

“When I was growing up, I went to Disneyland a lot. I went there like, 20 times by my 20th birthday.”

But Nazar Yousif, owner of Diablo Escapes, sees a change in location-based entertainment.

“People are looking for things closer to home to do that are as innovative and as amazing as what Disneyland was, those years ago,” he says. “And I think virtual reality is going to be that thing.”

Diablo Escapes had actually intended to start with physical escape rooms in May 2020 with VR coming later. Of course, once February rolled around and the COVID-19 pandemic hit? Plans changed. At first it was just a delay, but as it became clear that the pandemic would affect business for more than just a few months, they pivoted.

Building out multiple physical escape rooms in those conditions would be difficult, and they knew they wouldn’t get much upfront notice from the county on when they could open. But VR rooms allowed them to get ready without investing too much. They’d planned for two VR rooms, so they got them ready, bought the hardware, and were ready to open two weeks after the green light.

“It didn’t take much to do the final things that we needed to do to open the doors. Our website could show that we had at the time six different adventures available right away. So that was big.

“It gave people a good feeling. You know, when you have an escape room and you have several different adventures, it feels like it’s a major venue.”

Diablo has space for two VR rooms and two physical rooms that are still coming. But in a tough time for entertainment businesses, the ability to get up and running with VR while investing very little made it so that he could open his doors and start generating revenue.

The PCVR Choice

While many operators these days opt for the simplicity and lower cost of standalone headsets, Nazar decided to go for a high-end option.

“Our thinking, since we live in an area where we have folks that are fairly affluent, they’re expecting sort of the best. And we wanted to make sure that we offered the highest quality VR experience that we could offer.

“At the time, that included using backpack computers with RTX 2080 cards in them, to make sure we got the best quality we could get. So we went with backpacks to get that real high quality.”

Using backpack PCs, or streaming PCVR from desktops to headsets like the VIVE Focus 3 or VIVE Focus Vision, does come at a higher upfront cost and with a more technically complex installation. But that’s what Diablo Escapes intentionally selected for their Walnut Creek location, and it’s worked out well.

“People really are astounded by what it looks like when they’re in one of the vrCAVE games. The detail that vrCAVE has put into the textures, the lighting, reflections, the way fire looks. It’s incredible, and customers comment on that.”

Has the added cost harmed the return on investment? Not really. It’s been a quick turnaround from purchase to profit.

“So your return on investment with regard to setting up your VR room is going to be different based on the equipment you choose. If you choose higher end equipment, it’s going to take a little longer to recover that. But really not that long. If you’re doing well on your marketing and you’re bringing people in — we essentially became profitable on a monthly basis in the fifth month, I would say.”

Getting The Marketing Right

Along the way, Diablo Escapes has done well with that marketing. Nazar puts it down, broadly, to two things: good SEO, and good word of month.

When it comes to SEO, there are plenty of playbooks out there. Have a well-designed, well-organized website that hits the right keywords for your area to ensure that it shows up on relevant search queries. Sometimes, however, word of mouth can feel like a mystery. How do you get people just talking about your business?

At Diablo Escapes, it’s about providing an excellent experience for guests.

“It definitely involves having exceptional games, but it also involves, you know, greeting them at the door when they come in, being pleasant with them, being excited with them because they came here to have a lot of fun. It’s not something they do every day. and it’s kind of like going to Disneyland.

“You’re here to just really enjoy yourself. and we try to keep that going so even though they’re walking in with smiles, having that expectation that they walk out with even bigger smiles.”

That approach has delivered what many entertainment businesses consider the most important thing: positive reviews.

“You look at Diablo Escapes reviews here on Walnut Creek, you’ll find that they’re pretty much all five stars. They’re all legitimate reviews, and it takes a while to get there but once you have them, it really convinces a lot of people to come.”

Virtual Reality For Any Town

Nazar believes that society’s expectations on entertainment availability are changing. People want amazing experiences closer to home — and they can get them, too. What was once only available as part of a special trip to LA or Orlando can now be done in any building with a bit of space, in any town. It’s something people everywhere want, and it’s something businesses everywhere can do.

“It’s definitely an opportunity. It’s early enough that very few people out there are doing it or have experienced it. but it’s late enough that the technology right now is rock solid. It’s not like you have to wait for anything now. This is really the best time to get into it.

“We still get customers that haven’t experienced escape rooms or never done VR, and they have a blast. And that speaks to not just how well the games are designed, but how well they appeal to all ages really.”

Wondering if you could make this work for your community? vrCAVE’s VR escape rooms just require 17’ x 20’ and are available in seven languages. If you already have the space? You could be operational in as little as a week.

“There’s so many cities that don’t have this kind of an entertainment venue that would really benefit from it. People love it, and it’s not just techie people or people that are into escape rooms: it’s a wide variety of people. And we’re just going to see it grow.”

Want in? Contact vrCAVE today and we’ll help you get set up for success just like Diablo Escapes.

Escape rooms have exploded in popularity, captivating players of all ages and backgrounds. But why are they so captivating? At their core, escape rooms tap into a fundamental human desire: collaborative storytelling.

A History of Storytelling

From the earliest cave paintings to the captivating tales shared around campfires, humans have always sought to create and share stories. This innate human need for collaborative storytelling evolved through fairytales, bardic poetry, and ultimately, into the immersive worlds of modern video games.

Escape Rooms: A New Chapter in Storytelling

Escape rooms represent a unique evolution in this narrative. Instead of passively consuming a story, players actively participate in creating their own unique narrative within the confines of the game. Each decision, each solved puzzle, shapes the player’s journey and contributes to the overall story.

The Rise of VR Escape Rooms

Traditional escape rooms, while engaging, face certain limitations:

Space Constraints: Creating and maintaining multiple themed rooms can be costly and time-consuming.

Limited Immersion: Physical limitations can sometimes hinder the ability to fully immerse players in fantastical worlds.

VR escape rooms, however, offer a revolutionary solution:

Unlimited Possibilities: A single space can accommodate a multitude of themed experiences, from underwater adventures to intergalactic journeys.

Enhanced Immersion: VR technology transcends physical limitations, allowing players to experience truly immersive environments and engage with interactive elements in ways that were previously unimaginable.

Efficiency: Setting up and resetting VR experiences is significantly faster and more cost-effective compared to traditional escape rooms.

Key Advantages of VR Escape Rooms:

Starting a VR Escape Room Business

For businesses looking to enter the escape room market with limited resources, VR presents a compelling and cost-effective solution. With minimal setup requirements and the ability to offer a diverse range of experiences, VR escape rooms provide a unique and engaging entertainment option for players of all ages.

Using The Unique to Bring Customers back at Tropic Escape Room

When Tropic Escape Room adds a new room to their business, they ask themselves, “What’s going to be unique? What haven’t we seen done before?”

Manager Maddox explains. In Almost Famous, the players are a band who have to quickly finish their album while their lead singer attempts to betray them. In Sugar Rush, you have to spruce up an old candy factory and produce a legendary piece of candy. So when they were left with a spare room that wasn’t big enough to host its own escape room, they knew they needed something — but that something had to fit their approach of pushing for uniqueness.

“I felt that we needed something. Something new, something different. When we were approached by vrCAVE and we looked into it, we really thought it would be the next cool thing.”

With vrCAVE’s VR escape rooms, they’re able to run 9 full length escape room experiences, for up to 5 players walking freely around the same space, in a small 17’ x 20’ footprint. With the click of a button, they can launch their customers into space to save the world, take them on an adventure through time, or challenge them to prove their worth as full-fledged ninjas.

Positioning Escape Rooms, Traditional and VR

VR escape rooms aren’t out to replace traditional escape rooms, but complement them by providing a thrilling customer experience that slots in right along them and providing you, the owner, with eight more chances to win return business.

Escape room enthusiasts are often happy to work through all the available rooms in their area, and more casual fans are likely to come back at least once if the quality’s there. Tropic has found that the crossover interest in VR escape rooms is very much there.

“Our VR rooms go really well together with our regular rooms. We see people kind of doing the same methods they do in our regular escape rooms.

“They go around, they look around the walls, they look around on tables, you know, same thing with the VR rooms. We see people using the same methods across both rooms, it definitely feels like an escape room inside. I’ve had people tell me it feels like a real life escape room.”

Common clientele include the same people they’d see for the physical escape rooms. Lots of date nights, friends, and family groups. But being in Bonita Springs, Florida, there’s much more: tourists. And with that comes one tough competitor: the beach.

But they work with this, theming their location around it (particularly their Castaway escape room). And the flipside of it is that in Florida, it’s not sunny all the time. In a typical year, they’re going to see more than 100 rainy days. And when you’ve got tourists, bad weather, and you’re running an indoor entertainment business, you’ve got an opportunity.

“We get a lot of customers when it starts to rain. You know, when it starts raining at the beach, you don’t want to be there anymore. They find something inside to do. Escape rooms are typically people’s number one or top five choices to go to for indoor activities. and VR escape rooms as well.”

Whatever brings them to Tropic, one thing’s certain: the reaction.

“The customers are usually ecstatic. They’re very excited. They’re very happy. And I see people give each other hugs. I see some jumping in excitement, high fives. People are always asking what’s the next one that I can do?”

Repeat Business with VR Escape Rooms, Again and Again

The good news with VR escape rooms of course, is that because you can fit 8 experiences in a single space, there’s plenty waiting for anyone who wants to do “the next one”.

Even better than that, if they’re really ready to go, you can get a group in immediately. There are no room resets with VR escape rooms. No prop inspections and repairs. No need to relock padlocks and put things back where they’re supposed to go, fiddle with electronics, or reset mechanics. You just bring them back to the virtual lobby with one click, and start them on their next game with another.

“I had this group, it was a little date night for them. They came in and did one of the VR rooms. They finished it, loved it. They actually did better than the average for our location. and did end up rebooking for another one. And, you know, it was pretty exciting. They were going to try it again, and it’s still newer for us. So it was nice to see them try it again.

“And then after the second one, they decided to book for a third one, same night. And it was a pretty memorable experience. I remember I stayed about 30 minutes late just to let them do that extra one because I wanted to see them do it again.”

And with experiences that compelling, you bet that along with repeat business, you’re going to get some good reviews.

“We had an amazing experience,” Maddox shared from one. “We absolutely recommend VR. After we did the first one, we had to try another one and another one.”

Not much is better for a business owner than a customer talking about how they had to keep coming back!

Installing and Operating vrCAVE VR Escape Rooms

vrCAVE allows for a streamlined hardware implementation allowing business owners to flexibly install the system according to what works for them. All you need to do is decide on your headsets and accessories, purchase a computer and router, and prepare your room with basic tracking essentials. And VR is always available to help.

“So setting up vrCAVE was actually pretty easy. We followed the instructions like shown and it worked really easily. We were offered a video meeting to help us out, but we really didn’t need it.

“Everything worked as expected. When we had questions, we emailed vrCAVE, and they emailed us back the same day.”

In Tropic Escape Room’s case, they chose an empty room with their own wall decorations and a cart they can move in and out of the playspace housing the headsets. Their operator computer is in a separate room, but they’re able to monitor the action and ensure things are working smoothly.

Of course, actually operating the games is a breeze, thanks in part to a built-in system of automated hints.

“I love the automated hint system. It is one of my favorite things. It’s something we want to try to do with our real rooms, some kind of automation, but having it in VR was an absolute yes for us. Being able to let them get clues on their own when they want them is very convenient.”

Rather than having to constantly monitor and be available to give an appropriate clue to a group based on their progress, vrCAVE’s system already knows that. This eases the demand on the game master, freeing them up to keep tabs on groups in the physical rooms, customers at the front desk, or any other tasks.

“The fact that the clues are pre-created, we don’t have to worry about managing where they’re at in the game, but the system takes over and lets them get clues when they want it. It does help the game master a little bit as well, keeping them from doing so much at one time.”

Get Started In One Week

How would you like to get vrCAVE VR escape rooms in your own escape room business? Whether you’ve got a storage room you’re looking to monetize or physical room that’s not performing well enough, you could be welcoming your first VR customers in as little as a week. Just get in contact with us below now, and we’ll tell you everything you need to know so you can attract and retain customers just like Tropic Escape Room did. We can even send you a full demo of the games so you can test them out in your space and be fully assured they’ll work for you. Don’t wait — there’s no larger selection of free-roam VR escape rooms available anywhere!

You’ve set up your virtual play space and your VR escape games are ready to launch. The question is what headset should you go for? With many VR headsets to choose from, finding the best pair for your entertainment center is hard.

At vrCAVE, three free-roam VR headsets stand out as strong contenders – the Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3, and HTC Vive Focus 3. Each headset brings unique strengths to the table, making it essential to understand the key differences to determine which one aligns best with the experiences you want to offer.

Meta Quest 2: The All-Rounder

The Meta Quest 2 has solidified its position as a popular -and affordable- choice for VR enthusiasts. Its standalone nature eliminates the need for external hardware, offering unparalleled convenience.

Meta Quest 3: A Quantum Leap Forward

Building upon the success of its predecessor, the Meta Quest 3 represents a significant upgrade. With improved visuals, enhanced performance, and exciting features like mixed reality, the Quest 3 aims to redefine the VR experience without breaking your wallet.

HTC Vive Focus 3: The Professional’s Choice

The HTC Vive Focus 3 is a powerhouse designed with commercial VR venues in mind. Boasting exceptional display quality and a robust build, this headset caters to providing the most stunning and immersive visuals and audio.
